Work Permit for Students

Working while you are attending school in British Columbia:

Working on campus

Students studying six months or longer and who have a valid study permit may work on the campus of an eligible institution without a work permit.

Working off campus

The Off-Campus Work Permit Program allows certain foreign students to work off campus up to 20 hours a week, while completing their studies.

Co-op and internship programs

Work experience is part of the curriculum in some academic programs. These students will need to apply for a work permit, based on the guidance of the international student office.

NOTE: In general, students studying in British Columbia for less than six months are not allowed to work.

Working after you graduate from a school in British Columbia:

Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program allows students who have graduated from a participating British Columbia university, college or institute to gain valuable Canadian work experience.

Provincial Nominee Program

The Provincial Nominee Program allows Canadian employers to nominate non-Canadian employees for permanent resident status. This program is designed to help employers hire graduates with the skills they need.

Canadian Experience Class

Temporary foreign workers and a foreign students who graduated in Canada may have the qualities to move from temporary to permanent resident.
